When passing through my local town recently, on a wet and windy night, I went to cross the road. Not looking where I was going (I was instead, looking out for traffic) I stubbed my toe on some fallen street furniture. After the bruising went down, and the pain in the toe remained, I thought it best to get it looked at. After an x-ray, I was diagnosed with a fractured toe. This was not good news for my exercise regime, but there was some good news.
As a self employed financial adviser, I am unlucky that I don’t get any ‘benefits-in-kind’ from an employer, but lucky in that I have the professional expertise to know how important certain benefits are to everyone, including me. This includes ‘accident and sickness‘ insurance.
My policy pays out for a broken ‘minor bone’ (which in my case, means my toe) the fantastic sum of GBP1,000! My toe hurts, but that makes me feel an awful lot better!
Accident and sickness insurance will pay out when a policy holder has an accidental injury, or when the policy holder is sick enough to spend the night in a hospital. The pay outs range from GBP1,000 for a broken minor bone, to GBP250,000 for anyone unlucky enough to be paralysed in an accident, to GBP250 per night if the policy holder is in hospital.
The policy has other benefits. It will pay out GBP200,000 for accidental death, and so acts as a partial life insurance policy. It will pay out up to GBP10,000 for death for any reason. Although it’s not a funeral policy, the fact remains that it will pay out some monies to my estate, very quickly after my death, which my beneficiaries could use to pay for my funeral.
Incredibly, for a small additional monthly premium, my children (aged under 18) can be included on the policy, and so if they break a bone, or end up in hospital, there will be other payments from this insurance to me as the policy holder.

Accident and sickness insurance is personal protection. It doesn’t take the place of life insurance, or family protection, but it is a good policy to hold. It can be set up very easily, and is not medically underwritten (which means current health complications, and lifestyle issues are not taken into account during the application process).
If you want to see more details, or want to set up such a policy for yourself, let me know.
